What you see is a poem

Nakis Panayotidis

At the workshop “A lantern and a haiku!” children aged 6 to 8 draw inspiration from Nakis Panayotidis’ work The Storm and the Birdsong, that depicts the beauty and hope of nature that prevail despite rain and darkness just like an illustrated haiku, namely a very small, three-line poem, that usually describes a nature-related image.

The children make their own haiku poem, they engrave it on ink and then transfer it on a special rice paper using the monotyping technique. As soon as it is dry they place it on a wooden base and make a lantern, hence bringing their landscape to life.

* In Japanese haiku means “funny verse”. It is the shortest form of poetry in the world, it goes back six centuries and it describes a nature-related image providing information about the time of year.
