On Monday, June 2 at 20.30, the Athens String Quartet will present three landmark works in the evolution of American classical music at the Amphitheatre of the B&E Goulandris Foundation. Admission is free, but online reservation is required.

The programme will begin with the hypnotic minimalism of Philip Glass’s 3rd String Quartet from the work “Mishima”, essentially a “suite” from the stunning score of the film of the same name. It will continue with one of the most famous Adagios of all time: the second movement from Samuel Barber’s String Quartet Op. 11. The concert will conclude with the thrilling String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96 (“American”) by the great Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, who, during his stay in the United States in the late 19th century, laid the solid foundations of the American musical tradition with the masterpieces he was inspired to create there.

The Athens String Quartet was founded in 2010 and consists of members from the Athens State Orchestra and the Greek National Opera Orchestra: violinists Apollon Grammatikopoulos and Panagiotis Tziotis, violist Angela Giannaki and cellist Isidoros Sideris. They have performed in major concert halls both in Greece and abroad and have a strong presence at prestigious international festivals.

The Quartet frequently collaborates with both Greek and international artists and its repertoire includes key works of chamber music literature, as well as works by Greek and foreign composers, some of which it has premiered globally. Special emphasis is placed on its social mission: in collaboration with the Athens State Orchestra, the German Embassy and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the Quartet gives concerts in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, prisons, special schools, underprivileged areas and remote regions across Greece.

The Athens String Quartet has been awarded by the international association “Gina Bachauer” for the high level of its performances.
