The B&E Goulandris Foundation, as part of its film screening series “Art in the Seventh Art” as well as the Festival du Film Francophone de Grèce (French-speaking Film Festival in Greece), presents on Wednesday, April 1, the thematic guided tour “Art & Cinema.”

Art and cinema are two paths with many shared references. Cinema owes much to the visual culture of the past, particularly to painting and photography. Through the framing of the story told by a painting, and following the technological revolution of photography in the early 19th century, cinema found the tools that would allow it to become one of the most widespread forms of entertainment and artistic expression. The film screening series “Art in the Seventh Art,” successfully hosted by the B&E Goulandris Foundation, together with its collaboration with the Festival du Film Francophone, aims to make even more visible the artistic thread that connects two different forms of artistic expression.

The thematic guided tour “Art & Cinema,” through a journey in time featuring works from the Foundation’s permanent Collection, brings to the forefront the ideas that connect and relate the visual arts with cinema. From the fleeting movement of Impressionism expressed through light and shadow to movement itself in cinematic frames; from colour as symbol and emotional expression—beginning with the Post-Impressionist art of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and continuing in the cinematography of famous films where colour became a key means of expressing the characters’ psychology; and from the multiple perspectives of Cubism by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque to cinematic editing, with the stitching together—and sometimes collision—of different shots and points of view, a profound relationship and elective affinities become evident, showing how narrative cinema owes much to both traditional and modern painting.
