On Friday, April 24 at 20:00, the B&E Goulandris Foundation presents the film “Camille Claudel 1915” (2013) by the unconventional and unpredictable director Bruno Dumont, about the confinement in an asylum of the great French sculptor, companion of Rodin, who for many years remained unrecognised under his shadow.

1915, winter at the Montdevergues asylum in southern France. Camille Claudel, sculptor, muse and companion of Rodin, is confined there at the request of her parents, with the only glimmer of light being the rare but regular visits of her brother, Paul. Claudel would spend the last 29 years of her life in the asylum. She would never create another work. Her uniquely creative mind slowly fades away in loneliness and existential uncertainty.

Bruno Dumont, the acclaimed director of films such as Humanité and Flanders, constructs an elliptical, philosophical film based on the books of Paul Claudel, his correspondence with his sister Camille and the medical records documenting her treatment. He places Juliette Binoche in a real psychiatric clinic, surrounds her with actual patients and allows her to deliver a performance of rare depth. The result is a harsh and solitary film that unfolds as a different, irresistible masterpiece.
