"Cézanne et Moi" (2016) by Danièle Thompson
Film screening at the B&E Goulandris Foundation Amphitheatre
On Friday, January 23, 2026, the B&E Goulandris Foundation presents the first film of its new screening series “Art in the Seventh Art”: "Cézanne et Moi" (2016), directed by Danièle Thompson and starring Guillaume Canet and Guillaume Gallienne.
The film follows the complex and often turbulent relationship between the artist Paul Cézanne and his friend, the writer Émile Zola. From their childhood in Provence to their mature creative years, the film explores their friendship, conflicts, mutual attraction and the distance that gradually forms between two major figures of French art. The narrative captures their divergent paths and their profound need for artistic truth.
Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was one of the defining painters of the 19th century and is considered the artist who bridged Impressionism with modern art—the “father of us all,” as Picasso emphatically stated. His pioneering use of colour and distinctive geometric vision laid the groundwork for Cubism and influenced generations of artists. His works are displayed in the Foundation’s permanent Collection, offering visitors direct insight into his artistic evolution.
With the screening of "Cézanne et Moi", the Foundation invites the public to gain deeper insight into the man behind the artworks, the relationships that shaped his life and the broader cultural environment that influenced his creative output.
With the kind support of Feelgood Entertainment.
