The B&E Goulandris Foundation’s discussion series Historians’ Stories—in which historians, primarily of art but not exclusively, share with the public their journey through major exhibitions, noteworthy publications and unique expertise in conversation with the Foundation’s Head of Collection Marie Koutsomallis-Moreau—continues on Wednesday, December 3, with guest speaker Giovanna Bertazzoni, Chairman of Christie’s Europe.

Giovanna Bertazzoni is Chairman of Christie’s Europe and one of the most influential figures in the international art market. Since joining the organisation in 1998 as a specialist in Impressionist and Modern Art, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the house’s global strategy, overseeing landmark sales and leading strategic initiatives. As Global Head of the Impressionist and Modern Art Department from 2011 to 2024, she contributed to its worldwide expansion, with a highlight being the historic 2015 sale of Picasso’s Les femmes d’Alger (Version O), which broke the world auction record.

Renowned for her dynamic leadership and cross-disciplinary approach, she has been instrumental in Christie’s most iconic moments, including the Paul Allen Collection sale, the most successful single-owner art auction in history, achieving $1.6 billion. She specialises in works on paper and collaborates closely with major collectors and museums worldwide. She is a graduate of the University of Pavia and the École Nationale du Patrimoine and serves as an active member of the National Gallery London’s Board of Development.
