George Kontrafouris Quartet – “International Jazz Day”
This year’s cycle of the B&E Goulandris Foundation’s much-loved concert series Jazz at the Museum, which was titled “Her Voice” and explored new musical paths by incorporating classical music, lyrical song and other forms of expression, concludes on Thursday, April 30—International Jazz Day—with the George Kontrafouris Quartet in the performance “International Jazz Day.”
On the occasion of International Jazz Day, pianist George Kontrafouris and drummer Jason Wastor give voice to the next generations of Greek jazz and collaborate with students from the jazz direction of the Department of Music Studies at the Ionian University: Eleftheria Papaoikonomou (vocals) and Nikoletta Floumi (bass), for an evening of original compositions as well as original renditions of beloved pieces.
George Kontrafouris has collaborated with many renowned musicians, playing piano or hammond organ, such as Marc Johnson, Arild Andersen, Marcus Stockhausen, Andy Sheppard, Ralph Peterson Jr., Lou Donaldson and many others. He has been teaching piano and hammond organ for years at the Athenaeum Conservatory in Greece and at the Sibelius Academy in Finland, and in recent years he has been a member of the teaching staff at the Ionian University in Corfu. He has given numerous jazz seminars in Greece and abroad. Among other projects, he leads the George Kontrafouris Trio and the Baby Trio and performs with the George Trantalidis Trilogia ensemble and with Timo Lassy.

About the "Jazz at the Museum" series
The B&E Goulandris Foundation presents the concert series Jazz at the Museum, a programme dedicated to different currents of jazz. Once a month, jazz meets the visual arts at the Museum, taking us on a musical journey through the history of the genre, beginning in the B&E Goulandris Foundation Amphitheatre and under the artistic direction of Dimitris Tsakas.
After five successful years, this beloved concert series expands and evolves. It opens up to new musical paths, now embracing classical music, lyrical song and other forms of expression that highlight the timeless power of the musical art. The new thematic cycle, titled “Her Voice”, places women at the heart of the artistic exploration – as creators, performers and sources of inspiration. Through nine unique concerts, the programme explores the female presence and influence in the musical world, illuminating voice, experience, expression and creativity.
