Jazz at the Museum
Seeds (M. & C. Kalkanis) ft. Alcmini – “The First Bloom”
The new cycle of the B&E Goulandris Foundation’s much-loved concert series Jazz at the Museum, which this year is titled “Her Voice” and opens up to new musical paths embracing classical music, lyrical song and other forms of expression that highlight the timeless power of the musical arts, continues on Friday, December 12 with the duet of Mihalis and Christos Kalkanis, Seeds, together with Alcmini in the performance “The First Bloom.”
The sonic world crafted by Mihalis and Christos Kalkanis’ duet Seeds—where the acoustic timbres of double bass, clarinet and piano coexist with electronic sounds, creating imagery that at times evokes soundtracks and the neoclassical scene, and at others calls to mind Greece and its musical traditions—invites to the stage Alcmini, one of the rising voices of traditional Greek singing, who brings timeless melodies into the present with her own unique approach.
Mihalis Kalkanis experiments and often interacts with other art forms such as photography, poetry and dance. As a solo artist, he has presented his work in venues including Flux Laboratory, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), the National Gallery and the Benaki Museum, while with his ensemble Mihalis Kalkanis Group he has performed at major Greek festivals such as the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Summer Nostos Festival (SNFCC), the Athens Jazz Festival and more.
Christos Kalkanis, drawing aesthetic and artistic influences from Asia Minor, Thrace, classical music, jazz and electronic music, merges different worlds and creates original musical setups as a multi-instrumentalist, composing music for theatre and contemporary dance. With their duet Seeds, the two brothers have performed at numerous festivals, including Jazz Ahead, the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Athens City Festival and others.
Alcmini has participated in many projects, including productions of the Greek National Opera such as The Murderess by Giorgos Koumendakis, and has collaborated with artists such as Savina Yannatou, Petros Klampanis and Ermis. She made her solo debut with an a cappella rendition of the traditional Thracian song “Na ’man pouli” (“If I Were a Bird”), and her aim is to honour Greece’s timeless melodies by enriching them with her distinctive vocal style and contemporary aesthetic influences.

About the "Jazz at the Museum" series
The B&E Goulandris Foundation presents the concert series Jazz at the Museum, a programme dedicated to different currents of jazz. Once a month, jazz meets the visual arts at the Museum, taking us on a musical journey through the history of the genre, beginning in the B&E Goulandris Foundation Amphitheatre and under the artistic direction of Dimitris Tsakas.
After five successful years, this beloved concert series expands and evolves. It opens up to new musical paths, now embracing classical music, lyrical song and other forms of expression that highlight the timeless power of the musical art. The new thematic cycle, titled “Her Voice”, places women at the heart of the artistic exploration – as creators, performers and sources of inspiration. Through nine unique concerts, the programme explores the female presence and influence in the musical world, illuminating voice, experience, expression and creativity.
