Mindfulness at the Museum
A specially designed mindfulness programme of the B&E Goulandris Foundation (in Greek)
The new cycle of the B&E Goulandris Foundation’s specially designed programme “Mindfulness at the Museum” includes three sessions and will take place on Fridays May 30, June 13 and June 27, always in collaboration with art historian, art educator and mindfulness instructor Lydia Petropoulou.
The programme offers the public the opportunity to explore selected works from the Foundation’s permanent Collection through the technique of mindfulness—specifically, “The Dream of Plants” by Anna Maria Tsakali (May 30), “Demonstration” by Demosthenes Kokkinidis (June 13) and “Lonely Chair” by Marina Karella (June 27).
According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness is defined as “awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally”. The “Mindfulness at the Museum” activity is open to everyone and helps participants become active, conscious viewers, encouraging them to draw insight and knowledge from what they see and feel, rather than from what they already know, in order to understand a work of art or an art object. At the same time, they benefit from the advantages of mindfulness, such as improved attention and concentration, enhanced memory, reduced anxiety, better stress management and the cultivation of emotional awareness.
By focusing on the present moment, the ‘meditative journey’ serves as a means of empowering participants to awaken deeper connections and experience the artwork or object holistically, while also helping them develop and apply the practice of mindfulness in their daily lives.
