"Nerikomi" Pottery Workshop
2-part workshop for adults & teens (15+) with ceramist Elpida Kourtzi (in Greek)
The B&E Goulandris Foundation, drawing inspiration from its Collection, is organising a Nerikomi pottery workshop in collaboration with ceramist Elpida Kourtzi, designed for adults and teens (15+). The workshop will take place over two sessions, on April 4 & 11.
Through this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore the sculptural aspect of pottery, drawing inspiration from iconic works in the Foundation’s Collection. From ancient pottery techniques to Pablo Picasso’s groundbreaking ceramic creations, which redefined the art form by breaking away from traditional shapes and methods, we invite you to experiment and create your own unique ceramic objects.
The Nerikomi technique, which will be taught during the workshop, is a Japanese method of pottery where coloured clays are layered and combined to form intricate patterns that run through the entire material. This process requires precision and discipline but offers endless possibilities for artistic expression and experimentation.
At the end of the two sessions, participants will receive their fired and glazed ceramics, elegantly gift-wrapped, as a keepsake of their creative journey.
- In the first session, after a brief introduction to the ancient art of pottery, participants will be introduced to Nerikomi. They will mix pigments with porcelain, creating various tonal variations, which they will then layer and arrange—either randomly or symmetrically—to form mosaics and unique patterns.
- In the second session, participants will use their coloured porcelain dough to create plates and bowls. By placing the mosaic-like pieces side by side and rolling them out, each participant will observe how the colour patterns evolve in their own porcelain slab.
