Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict
Greece and Switzerland between International Norms and National Strategies
To mark Human Rights Day, the Embassy of Switzerland in Greece, in partnership with the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will host a discussion on “Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict”. The event will take place on Wednesday, 10 December at 11:00 at the Amphitheatre of the B&E Goulandris Foundation.
The conference is conceived as a forum to exchange views and best practices on safeguarding cultural heritage in armed conflicts, in line with the 1954 Hague Convention and its protocols. The panel will feature distinguished experts and representatives from national and international institutions, namely:
- Ms. Artemis Papathanassiou, Head of the Special Legal Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic
- Ms. Constantina Benissi, Archaeologist, Head of the Department for the Supervision of Greek & Foreign Scientific Institutions & Coordination of International Cooperation & Organizations, Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, Hellenic Ministryof Culture
- LtCol Dimitrios Chatzifoteinos, Military Legal Adviser, Hellenic Armed Forces, Joint Legal Corps
- Ms. Sandra Bialystok, Director of Communication and Partnerships of ALIPH (International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage)
- Ms. Agata Guirard, Deputy Head of the Group for the Protection of Cultural Goods, Swiss Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport

An introduction will be made by Mr. Stefan Estermann, Ambassador of Switzerland in Greece.
