“Section spéciale” (1975) by Costa-Gavras

In 1974, director Costa-Gavras invited Takis to participate in the musical score for his next film, Section spéciale (Special Section), with a screenplay by Jorge Semprún.

The film, starring Louis Seigner, Michael Lonsdale, Roland Bertin and Pierre Dux, narrates the creation of a Special Court by the Vichy collaborationist government, tasked with prosecuting acts of resistance against the German occupation during World War II. Section spéciale earned Costa-Gavras the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1975, as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film the following year.

Following the screening, there will be an online discussion with the director Costa-Gavras.

Costa-Gavras on Takis:

“[…] Takis gave me a tour of his studio, his sculptures and in particular his many Cinétiques musicales [Kinetic Musicals] as he insisted on calling them. The visit was a revelation of his poetic universe that I found fascinating, even moving.

One wooden sculpture after the other, simple planks in the shape of a door standing upright came to life by piano or double-bass strings that brought them into an invisible magnetic field. They vibrated when struck by an iron rod or a large mattress needle that was periodically magnetized by an invisible electrical system.

The effect produced was mysterious and entrancing, with sudden romantic gradations. I listened for a long while to this unexpected, bewitching concert of musical sounds under the interested gaze of their creator. Without prelude I asked Takis if he would allow me to incorporate his “musical sounds” into my film Section spéciale [Special Section], that I was close to finishing, in a kind of dialogue between a specific situation and the characters.”
