A lantern and a haiku!
Workshop for children aged 6-8
“What you see is a poem”
Nakis Panayotidis
Nakis Panayotidis’ work The Storm and the Birdsong, that is part of the retrospective exhibition “Shut your Eyes and See” organised by the B&E Goulandris Foundation, depicts the beauty and hope of nature that prevail despite rain and darkness.
It is just like an illustrated haiku, namely a very small, three-line poem, that usually describes a nature-related image.
At the workshop “A lantern and a haiku!” children aged 6 to 8 make their own haiku poem, they engrave it on ink and then transfer it on a special rice paper using the monotyping technique.
As soon as it is dry they place it on a wooden base and make a lantern, hence bringing their landscape to life.
* In Japanese haiku means “funny verse”. It is the shortest form of poetry in the world, it goes back six centuries and it describes a nature-related image providing information about the time of year.
