Through this workshop, we examine gold-plated wood carvings, frames and furniture from the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Collection, to learn more about the history of these unique objects and the techniques and tools that were used to create them.

Participants will have the opportunity to gain a practical insight into their making, by acting as a wood sculptor, goldsmith and conservator of frames and furniture all at once. The workshop aims to deepen their understanding of the craft of gold-plating, as well as museum display and practice. They will study antique objects up-close to observe their construction, study gold-smithing techniques and understand the treatment of damage caused over time.

During the first part of the workshop, we will examine the relationship between paintings from across a range of periods and their frames, as well as the restoration and maintenance process used to treat and protect such artworks. We will then become goldsmiths ourselves, using our new-found knowledge within the specialized studio space to gold-plate a frame of our own, from start to finish.

It is advised that participants have an apron or change of clothes with them.
