Jazz at the Museum

Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet – Dawn at the Mediterranean

The latest series of the B&E Goulandris Foundation’s Jazz at the Museum concerts, which explores different aspects of the Mediterranean region drawing inspiration from the exhibition “Neo-Impressionism in the Colours of the Mediterranean”, continues on Friday February 9 with the concert “Dawn at the Mediterranean” by the Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet.

The distinctive musical identity of the Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet is defined by the special combination of lyra and piano trio compositions, with influences of Greek traditional, Byzantine and classical music as well as various improvisations that draw inspiration from the world of jazz and contemporary music. At the B&E Goulandris Foundation Amphitheatre concert the quartet will present new compositions for lyra and piano trio, inspired by Mediterranean music traditions.

The Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet first appeared in 2011 presenting takes on different Greek music traditions. The band then focused on original compositions by Sokratis Sinopoulos, which were included in the album Eight Winds that was released by ECM Records in 2015. The quartet’s second album, Metamodal, was released in 2019.

Sokratis Sinopoulos and his quartet have performed in concert venues around Greece as well as in venues and jazz festivals across Europe.

About the "Jazz at the Museum" series:

The B&E Goulandris Foundation presents Jazz at the Museum, a series of tribute concerts to different jazz genres. Once a month, jazz meets visual arts and together they take us on a music journey to the heart of jazz, at the B&E Goulandris Foundation Amphitheatre and under the artistic direction of Dimitris Tsakas.

In this series, jazz ensembles draw inspiration from the Foundation’s exhibition “Neo-Impressionism in the Colours of the Mediterranean” and explore different aspects of the Mediterranean region. Following the concert by the Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet on February 9, the Dimitris Tsakas “Sonic Horizons Trio” feat. Stella Valasi & Kimon Karoutzos will present “Color Science” on March 8 and the series will end on April 5, with the performance “Mediterranean Touch” by the Human Touch trio (Stavros Lantsias, David Lynch, Yiotis Kiourtsoglou).
