Kurinuki: The primitive aspect of Japanese art
Pottery workshop for adults and teens (15+) with Elpida Kourtzi (in Greek)
The B&E Goulandris Foundation, in collaboration with ceramist Elpida Kourtzi, introduces adults and teens (15+) to the Japanese kurinuki technique with the pottery workshop “Kurinuki, the primitive aspect of Japanese art”.
Using the Foundation’s Collection of works as a starting point, we will make unique ceramic everyday objects. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the ancient Japanese kurinuki technique of making everyday objects and, observing Pablo Picasso’s impulsive lines and Claude Monet’s rainy setting, they will make their own unique work of art using only a piece of clay.
At the first meeting, following a short introduction to the symbols used in Japanese pottery participants give shape to a clay ball weighing 1 kg, carving and emptying it out with a stone and a knife. Then they make their own cups, applying a technique that honours the uniqueness of each piece and the history it represents through its textures and shapes.
At the second meeting participants choose between different earthy colours and apply high temperature glazing techniques to their works.
A week after the completion of the second meeting the students will be able to pick up from the Museum their works baked, glazed and gift-wrapped and take them home.
