Two books, a sculpture and a painting embark on a dialogue and make everything possible!

Words, images and materials come together in the frenzy of modern art, mind and imagination as children get hold of them.

At the workshop titled What is Edgar Degas’ famous dancer doing in Vincent van Gogh’s olive grove?, children aged 7 to 12 embark on an unusual journey that brings together art and knowledge starting with a colourful corridor of books that triggers the imagination. The workshop is a collaboration between the B&E Goulandris Foundation, the Melissa Publishing House and the Vivliodiaplaseis organisation.

We follow Edgar Degas as he is fascinated by the movement of a young ballerina who is in the fourth position. What could Marie be thinking of? The young girl suddenly lets her hair loose, leaves the stage and escapes. Her mind is set on a field with olive trees… “Olives are so special and exceptional!” Vincent van Gogh tells her.

Through book readings and role-playing games we sharpen our observation skills and prepare children to create their own work, made of words and images. All materials pour out of a pouch and the process of creation gets under way as the young visitors think, write and glue, combining tulle with paper and crayons, becoming actual writers and illustrators. Their work will provide the answer to the question: What is Edgar Degas’ famous dancer doing in Vincent van Gogh’s olive grove?
