If you see a daisy as blue, then make it blue!

Drawing inspiration from Paul Gauguin’s work “Still life with vase”, that is part of the collection of the National Gallery in London and is on display at the B&E Goulandris Foundation until January 2025, children aged 5 to 7 observe the exotic flowers the artist came across during his travels to his beloved Tahiti and explore flower painting that was popular at the end of the 19th century.

With me, everything happens in my exuberant imagination. [..] I start a still life and finish it without any model”, said Gauguin. What did he mean?

During the workshop, together we decorate a bouquet of flowers, we observe it and then we hide it. We close our eyes and then try to remember what it looks like. And? We realise that each of us remembers different colours and shapes! Why? Because our imagination decides what it wants to add or omit, just as it happens in dreams.

At the workshop “What do our eyes remember?”, children make their own flower composition which they then depict on paper guided by their senses. Flowers, stencils, colourful inks and essential oils are the materials that they will use, along with endless imagination.
