Wine and art, a story of inspiration
A unique wine appreciation and tasting journey through the vineyards of Northern Greece at the B&E Goulandris Foundation (in Greek)
What is the relationship between art and wine?
How often do we see wine taking centre stage or having a more subtle presence in works of art?
On Monday March 10 from 19.00 to 21.00 the B&E Goulandris Foundation, in collaboration with the Winemakers of North Greece, invites you on a special journey of wine appreciation and tasting, exploring the unique varieties of northern Greek vineyards.
The inspiration for this journey comes from the painting “Still Life” by artist Pavlos (Pavlos Dionyssopoulos), which is on display on the fourth floor of the Foundation’s permanent Collection.
Based on the colour palette and the different wine styles of Northern Greece, the president of the Association and chemist-oenologist Eleni Sintou, along with director Alexandra Anthidou, will guide us through the fascinating world of wine tasting at the Foundation's Café-Restaurant, following a brief tour of the fourth floor of the Collection.
Through seven different wines from top winemakers, we will have the opportunity to explore representative varieties and wine styles from Northern Greece. We will begin with bubbles and a sparkling wine from the Debina variety, the queen of Epirus. We will continue with Assyrtiko, the Greek variety that has now gained international acclaim, originally from Santorini but producing equally fascinating results in Northern Greece. Next is the indigenous Naoussa variety, Negoska, in a rosé version, followed by Malagouzia, the "Cinderella" of the vine, which was unexpectedly revived just a few decades ago. We will even taste it in two unusual golden versions, one of which will be saved for the end.
The color palette then darkens with two red wines: Limnio – one of the oldest grape varieties in the world – and Xinomavro, the "diva" of the Greek vineyard, a highly versatile and multifaceted variety with exceptional appeal in the global wine market.
To close the evening and seek the aftertaste of the fusion between art and wine, we will ask ourselves: which wine from those we tasted represents the ideal “art & wine pairing” in relation to the painting by Pavlos Dionyssopoulos? Which wine, with its aromatic characteristics and style, do you believe best matches the aesthetics of the painting and why?
*The event will be accompanied by a platter of cheeses and cured meats from small Greek producers, as well as a selection of freshly baked grissini, kindly provided by the specialty traditional grocery store Kerannymi and the Monokeros bakery, respectively.
