Museum of Contemporary Art, Andros
An exhibition of Balthus (1908-2001), the last Master of 20th century, was presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Andros.
In total, 121 of his works (oil paintings, water-colours, gouaches and drawings) were presented, having been brought together from various private collections and galleries abroad, published in a fully illustrated, bilingual catalogue (Greek, French).
After Andros, the Balthus exhibition was moved and presented in Rome, in the Villa Medici, in co-operation with the French Academy in Rome.
[…] A new exhibition on Balthus is being inaugurated tomorrow in the 'Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation' in Andros which will last until 17th September. A tribute to Andreas Embiricos starts tonight and ends tomorrow in Andros at the same place. […] What one can say, especially this year, as the most positive aspect of what is attempted every year on the island, is that the choices are becoming more and more eclectic. Moreover, the Museum is forming a public who can accept and communicate with a creation that is totally different from the current one. […]
[…] This year I heard that students of Balthus and famous art critics asked to visit Andros because they had never up till now had the chance to see the water-colours and the drawings that are being shown in Greece in any museum of the world. […] And I must say I was doubly glad to see the dreaming virgins of this strange painter emerging from their pale visionary world to meet Embiricos' Mandalenia who 'under the walnut tree, on the swing she flutters her desires, astride with golden spurs'. […]
If, in our last article about the activities of the Goulandris Foundation in Andros, we thought that the choices were becoming more and more eclectic, now, after last weekend on the island and at the Museum of Contemporary Art, we can assert it with certainty. The lasting impression is of a wonderful exhibition of the great Balthus and a very interesting meeting over two days between the poet Andreas Embiricos and a warm public. […]
An idealistic lyrical and pioneering poet, Andreas Embiricos, and an independent painter the Frenchman, Balthus - last of the 20th century Masters - 'met' through their creations on the same Cycladic island, offering all who encountered them this weekend, intellectual regeneration and spiritual peace.
Once again the Museum of Contemporary Art in Andros will prove to us that a small museum in the provinces is not a half-extinguished exhibition space but a cultural hearth, promoting aesthetic and social messages, not only throughout Greece, but also internationally. […]
[…] Basil Goulandris established a foundation where, every year, he delights the locals, the art lovers and the surprised tourists with an exhibition of a great modern or contemporary artist: Picasso, Kupka, Cartier-Bresson, Matisse, Kandinsky. This year it is Balthus who occupies the whole space of the Foundation situated in the little seaside Hora. One hundred and twenty works were assembled there, mostly drawings, some delicately refreshing water-colours and the latest oil painting of this rare painter: 'The cat in the mirror II'. […]
