Glancing at the Century
28.06 - 20.09.1998
Without claiming to be a retrospective, the exhibition Glancing at the Century touched on important aspects of 20th century art by presenting artists from various periods and currents of the past hundred years. The aim was to give an idea, even though schematic, of modern and contemporary artistic creation, but also to offer a fertile stimulus both to the exhibition visitors and to the readers of the catalogue (a Greek and an English edition), which accompanied the exhibition.
The exhibition presented 95 works (oil paintings, drawings, watercolors, engravings and sculptures), belonging to the Foundation's Collection, as well as private collections.
A total of 42 artists were exhibited: Edgar Degas (1834-1917), Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931), Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940), Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958), Kees van Dongen (1877-1968), André Derain (1880-1954), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Georges Braque (1882-1963), Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), Jean Arp (1886-1966), Léonard-Tsuguharu Foujita (1886-1968), Marc Chagall (1887-1985), Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978), Joan Miró (1893-1983), Ben Nicholson (1894-1982), Jean Fautrier (1898-1964), Henri Michaux (1899-1984), Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985), Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), Victor Brauner (1903-1966), Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975), Jean Hélion (1904-1987), Germaine Richier (1902-1959), Balthus (1908-2001), Karel Appel (1921-2006), César (1921-1998), Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008), Jean Tinguely (1925-1991) & Nikki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002), Hundertwasser (1928-2000), Andy Warhol (1928-1987), Fernando Botero (1932- ), Christo (1935- ), A. About
[…] The exhibition was very well presented and supported by a comprehensive and enlightening catalogue, in the tradition of the Museum. […] All in all, although the exhibition is not a complete panorama of the century, it does succeed in offering much aesthetic pleasure to the visitor to Andros. And with the aid of the exceptional catalogue, it is also highly instructive. […]
The highly significant exhibition Glancing at the Century organised by the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation constitutes a challengefor an overall approach to the art of contemporary times. […] The catalogue, with a work by the self-taught Austrian painter Hundertwasser on the cover, is a collector's item for the art lover's library. […]
