The B&E Goulandris Foundation’s popular "Jazz at the Museum" concert series launches a new cycle dedicated to “Poetry and Jazz”, which kicks off on Friday January 27 with a tribute to 20th century Jazz Poetry and Japanese haiku by the We Real Cool quartet.

Jazz at the Museum

We Real Cool Quartet – 20th century jazz poetry & Japanese Haiku

The We Real Cool quartet will start a dialogue between the music of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane and the poetry of Langston Hughes, Bob Kaufman, Raymond Carver and Matsuo Basho. The evening will feature original compositions, free improvisations and jazz standards, highlighting the role of poetry as an entity of its own but also as part of music.

The We Real Cool quartet consists of Takis Paterelis, Kostis Christodoulou, Periklis Trivolis and Dimitris Klonis. The group’s name is inspired by the poem “We Real Cool” by African American poet Gwendolyn Brooks, often hailed as one of the most indicative examples of jazz poetry.

We Real Cool:
Takis Paterelis, saxophone
Kostis Christodoulou, piano
Periklis Trivolis, double bass
Dimitris Klonis, percussion

About the Jazz at the Museum series

The B&E Goulandris Foundation presents Jazz at the Museum, a series of tribute concerts to different jazz genres. Once a month, jazz meets visual art and together they take us on a music journey to the heart of jazz, at the B&E Goulandris Foundation Amphitheatre and under the artistic direction of Dimitris Tsakas.

In the latest series, four great jazz bands present different aspects of the connection between jazz and poetry, starting with a tribute to 20th century jazz poetry and Japanese haiku by the We Real Cool quartet.
