Jazz at the Museum
We Real Cool Quartet – 20th century jazz poetry & Japanese Haiku
The We Real Cool quartet will start a dialogue between the music of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane and the poetry of Langston Hughes, Bob Kaufman, Raymond Carver and Matsuo Basho. The evening will feature original compositions, free improvisations and jazz standards, highlighting the role of poetry as an entity of its own but also as part of music.
The We Real Cool quartet consists of Takis Paterelis, Kostis Christodoulou, Periklis Trivolis and Dimitris Klonis. The group’s name is inspired by the poem “We Real Cool” by African American poet Gwendolyn Brooks, often hailed as one of the most indicative examples of jazz poetry.
