Artist Augustus Veinoglou will teach relief sculpture, using selected works from the B&E Goulandris Foundation Collection, in a series of five workshops for adults and teenagers aged 15+ titled “Clay sculpture bas relief”.

Relief sculpture, one of the oldest representation techniques, highlights narrative elements through the liveliness of sculpture. The earliest reliefs can be traced in advanced ancient civilizations, while contemporary artists have extensively focused on relief sculpture, enriching the ancient techniques with abstract elements and occasionally colour.

The workshops will get participants acquainted with the basic techniques of clay modeling. Using as a starting point selected works of the Foundation’s Collection, by Gauguin, Picasso, Nicholson, Giacometti and others, they will initially be introduced to the drawing techniques so that they can then transfer their idea on to clay and give it shape. They will finally make a plaster relief and complete their works with colour and surface finish.
