Is it possible to find human machines on earth?

Can our eyes turn into wheels?

The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation urges children aged 6 to 8 to set their imagination free in an educational workshop that “defies” the rules. Drawing inspiration from the Museum’s permanent Collection, we create self-portraits that are very different from our real depiction.

Léger’s mechanical elements and Clemente’s spontaneous expressions provide the motivation to make portraits that offer a sneak peek into the future. The multidimensional features of images inspire children to explore the similarities and especially the differences between the two works, as well as the techniques used by each artist.

At the “Mechanical Heroes” workshop, children discover that our portrait does not necessarily have to be a depiction of our reflection in the mirror. New means like photography and printing become the tools to make a collage self-portrait, giving children the opportunity to experiment and use different techniques to turn an idea into art. Hence, by deconstructing the face in a fun way a new hero is born, allowing the mind to travel to a future world.
