The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation invites students to take part in an interactive museum experience in the world of modern and contemporary art!

Nursery and Kindergarten

What were Basil and Elise Goulandris’s favourite pastimes? How can we travel to distant destinations without taking a plane, train or boat?

This educational programme gives children the opportunity to discover unique works of art from the Foundation’s Collection, while experimenting with sound, movement and colour. Through paintings and sculptures displayed on the first two floors of the permanent Collection, children embark on an imaginary journey to different parts of the world, discovering artists and stories along the way.

Children will have the chance to “meet” the works of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, listen to the sounds of Wassily Kandinsky, witness the sunrise through the eyes of Roy Lichtenstein, and discover the materials of Jean Dubuffet and Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

The aim of the programme is to liberate children’s imagination, helping them feel that art is not only something we see, but something we live, hear and feel.

Years 1 and 2 of Primary School

What exactly is an art collection? How can we experiment with the works in a collection and follow their stories to distant lands?

Every child has an artist within! Guided by intuition, children recreate significant moments of their lives through their creations. This is why children’s expression can be so moving—just like the works of the great painters in the Collection lovingly assembled by Basil and Elise Goulandris.

In this educational programme, children experiment with the works in the Collection, focusing on colours and shapes while exploring the artists’ stories. Using different approaches—such as touch, observation, music and movement—they travel to new worlds and discover the power of art to transport us to another time and place.

This journey through art offers children the opportunity to free their imagination and experience the Collection not only with their eyes, but with all their senses.

Years 3–6 of Primary School

In this educational programme, children experiment with different ways of approaching works of art: they explore replicas by touch, observe closely, close their eyes and listen, discuss and express themselves. At the same time, they discover key milestones in art history, study the works and influences of major artists, identify important movements of modern art and explore the relationship between artworks and nature, history, other cultures and—most importantly—themselves.

What emotions do works of art evoke? What defines an artist and what means do they use in their practice? Is there such a thing as right or wrong in art? These are some of the questions students are invited to reflect upon while exploring the Foundation’s Collection.

Years 1–3 of Lower Secondary School

Images, like words, help us to think, imagine and understand the world around us—as well as ourselves.

How can images from the Foundation’s artworks activate language and, in turn, inspire free personal creativity?

This educational programme invites students to explore art in depth and discover the power of creation through the works in the Collection. By studying artworks, materials and the influences of major artists, students experiment with different methods of interpretation and analysis.

The programme encourages active participation in a creative dialogue, allowing students to form their own interpretations. Through experience and the awakening of all the senses, students discover new ways of perceiving and composing, deepening their understanding of the Collection while developing imagination and critical thinking.

Years 1–3 of Upper Secondary School

Adolescents focus on themselves. They question, grow and change significantly as their personalities take shape. Authentic self-expression directly influences their development, and it is vital that they discover how to feel, think and create.

This educational programme offers students the opportunity to bring their own questions, statements and challenges into the world of modern and contemporary art. The aim is for them to participate actively in interpreting the Collection of Basil and Elise Goulandris, expressing their own viewpoints and analysing artworks through different techniques and approaches.

Through this process, students strengthen their relationship with modern and contemporary art, engaging both in dialogue and in moments of silence, where the artwork becomes an object of deep reflection and personal connection. Art becomes a tool for understanding themselves and the world around them more fully.
