The B&E Goulandris Foundation’s Museum in Athens celebrates its 5th birthday with many different events

On Wednesday October 2, the B&E Goulandris Foundation’s Museum in Athens turns five and celebrates its birthday with many different events addressed to all age groups, ranging from free admission and guided tours to free documentary screenings about Henri Cartier-Bresson. The festive atmosphere continues throughout the entire month as the rich program of events scheduled for this year gets under way.


Free admission and guided tours on Wednesday, October 2

On Wednesday October 2 admission to the Museum will be free, while three different guided tours of the permanent Collection have also been scheduled at 13.00, 15.00 and 17.00.

Discover one of the most important private collections to be assembled in the second half of the 20th century and get to know rare masterpieces of modern and contemporary art by artists who left their mark on the 19th and 20th centuries such as Cézanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Rodin, Picasso, Braque, Giacometti, Bacon and Pollock as well as works by important Greek artists including Tsarouchis, Moralis, Hadjikyriakos-Ghika and Parthenis.

Participation in the guided tours is free and online advance bookings are necessary.

Free documentary screenings about Henri Cartier-Bresson

As part of the tribute to landmark photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson that is on display until October 27, the documentaries Henri Cartier-Bresson: Point d’interrogation and Henri Cartier-Bresson, L’amour tout court will be screened at the Foundation’s Amphitheatre on October 3 and 17 respectively.

At the documentary Henri Cartier-Bresson: Point d’interrogation that is directed by Sarah Moon in collaboration with Robert Delpire and includes footage from Cartier-Bresson’s homes in Paris and Provence, the great photographer talks about his passion for painting, analyses different aspects of photography and shares his own photographs.

Raphaël Byrne’s documentary Henri Cartier-Bresson, L’amour tout court focuses on 93-year-old Henri Cartier-Bresson who shares his views on the art of photography, further featuring interviews with artists representing other forms of art such as music and painting.

The documentaries are in French with Greek subtitles and screenings start at 19.30. Admission is free and online advance bookings are necessary.

Jazz at the Museum

The new series of the B&E Goulandris Foundation’s Jazz at the Museum concerts, which is titled “Jazz Interactions” and explores the different ways that jazz music interacts with other forms of art, kicks off on Friday October 4 with Charis Ioannou’s Workin’ Trio and the performance “The two sides of Charis Ioannou”.

At the B&E Goulandris Foundation Amphitheatre the Workin’ Trio will play music from the jazz golden era in the mid-20th century, while a selection of recent photographs by Charis Ioannou, who specialises in black and white street photography, will be screened during the concert.

Rossiniade

Rossiniade”, a theatre performance for 4- to 9-year-olds conceived and directed by Chloe Mantzari, is here to change children’s common perception that opera is boring. Featuring period costumes, videos, art, impressive choreographies as well as some of the most beautiful arias and music from Rossini’s works “The Barber of Seville”, “Cinderella”, “William Tell” and “The Italian Girl in Algiers” and popular children’s songs such as the “Comic Duet for Two Cats”, the musical fairy tale gets under way at the Foundation’s Amphitheatre on Sunday October 13.

Seminar on diaphragmatic breathing, orthophony and the use of the body’s resonance chambers by Maria Papageorgiou

On October 30, well-known singer, songwriter and vocal teacher Maria Papageorgiou will launch a seminar on diaphragmatic breathing, orthophony and the use of the body’s different resonance chambers at the first floor of the B&E Goulandris Foundation’s permanent Collection, offering once a month a holistic approach to personal harmonisation through Art.

With the help of some simple exercises and by observing the human voice as well as analysing important works of the Foundation’s Collection, Maria Papageorgiou will teach natural breathing techniques, the role of the diaphragm in breathing and its possibilities, the key points of resonance, ways to enhance our voice while speaking and singing and much more.

Olive oil tasting

On October 30, the B&E Goulandris Foundation launches its first olive oil tasting event, drawing inspiration from Vincent van Gogh’s work “Olive Picking” that is on display at the first floor of the permanent Collection. Following a quick guided tour of Van Gogh’s work, once a month participants will have the opportunity to taste different varieties of olive oil at the Museum’s Café-Restaurant under the guidance of chef Aristotelis Mengoulas. Discover recipes that bring out olive oil’s scents and qualities, meet different Greek producers and get acquainted with award-winning varieties from around Greece.
