The Art of the Multiple from the Collection of the Basil & Εlise Goulandris Foundation

The B&E Goulandris Foundation in Athens presents a big tribute to the fundamental role of multiples in modern and contemporary art.

The Foundation’s tribute to this form of art that has not yet gained the recognition it deserves features approximately 90 lithographs, engravings and ceramics from the Foundation’s Collection, that bear the signatures of eight acclaimed 19th and 20th century artists: Aristide Maillol (1861-1944), Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Fernand Léger (1881-1955), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Georges Braque (1882-1954), Joan Miró (1893-1983) and Balthus (1908-2001).

Visitors will be able to discover, among other works, the complete albums “Les Maîtres du dessin - Aristide Maillol”, “12 Lithographs” by Lautrec, Léger’s “Cirque”, Hesiod’s “Theogony” illustrated by Braque and Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights”, as imagined by Balthus. As for Matisse, Picasso and Miró, they once more prove the decisive role they played in the development of 20^th century engraving and ceramics.

Other than exploring the world of engraving and ceramics, the exhibition further stresses the key role of many collaborators who were involved in editing the works, including Ambroise Vollard, Aimé, Marguerite and Adrien Maeght, Tériade, Fernand Mourlot and Suzanne Ramié.

Guided tours of the exhibition in Greek and English as well creative workshops for kids will get under way at the end of September. The Museum can also provide group and private guided tours upon request throughout the exhibition.

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue, in Greek and English, that includes texts by the exhibition’s curator Marie Koutsomallis-Moreau, a Glossary of engraving terms which is necessary to fully understand the methods that have been used, as well as the resumes of all the valuable collaborators who gave the artists the opportunity to excel in the art of the multiple.
